Fishing for Gifts

If you are checking your list and checking it twice and you find a fisherman or fisherwoman on your list, grab a Cabela's catalog and your credit card and let's go shopping!

Don't even try to buy rods, reels or lures for that special person unless you really now what you are doing! Fishing products catch just about as many fishermen as they do fish. A gift certificate to the catalog, internet or local tackle suppliers would be great!

The one thing you can get for your fishing friends is clothing! If they have a boat that matches their truck and their tackle box, then consideration to color coordinate their clothing should be made as well. A generally rule of thumb is black for winter, and white for summer.

Fishing has really changed since you were a kid. Visions of Andy Griffith walking a barefooted Opie with rolled up jeans or tobacco-chewing fat guys in tee shirts two sizes too small sitting on a drywall bucket sucking down warm beer waiting for a fish to come by, have been replaced by today's anglers who invest a lot of time and money in their sport. Looking good is very important, but comfort is essential.

Fortunately, high tech materials are being incorporated into practical designs. Waterproof and breathable materials like Gore-Tex (not invented by Al Gore) are sold under a variety of manufacturers labels. Wool and fleece still offer nature's best. "Long johns" have also come a long way. New fibers and weaves have made for lighter, warmer and more comfortable clothing. You don't need as many layers as you used to. You don't have to look like the Michelin man to be comfortable. Comfort and style have come together from head to toe.

From the bottom up, the most comfortable thing you can put on your feet is a TEVA sandal! (by the way, pronounced teh-vah, the Hebrew word for nature) These have replaced the basketball shoe as the footwear of choice weekend anglers and pros alike. Fishing is an all-day standing-up sport. I was skeptical at first, but now I wear my TEVAs nearly year round. www.teva.com

Wearing sandals in the winter and even in the rain is possible with Seal Skinz fleece-lined socks. These socks enable me to extend my sandal season to nearly year-round. Seal Skinz also makes gloves that are waterproof and breathable. These gloves have "Gripper dots" that enable you to feel and grip fishing equipment. www.danalco.com

For a great year-round rain suit, check out Frogg Toggs. These are a lightweight, breathable waterproof jacket and pants set that also makes for a great outer layer on cool days. Frogg Toggs are windproof as well. Another big advantage is that this product is much cheaper than Gore-Tex. www.froggtoggs.com

For a great selection of shirts, pants and outer clothing, check out Woolrich. Founded in the 1830's, this company not only has traditional woolen products, but a wide variety of outdoors clothing and accessories. They even make pants that unzip above the knee to become shorts. Their vented long sleeve shirts have many pockets, vented backs and even UV protection. These shirts are comfortable year round.

Another gift item is sunglasses. For fishing, polarized sunglasses are a must! Not only do polarized glasses protect you from the suns' harmful rays, but also allow fishermen to see objects in the water. I like glass lenses because they are more scratch resistant and they offer better optics. I recommend Maui Jim sunglasses. There are two lenses that work for most fishing conditions. The HCL (high contrast lens) lens is what I wear in the summer. Most of the time, the sun is high and we are fishing in shadows. In the fall and winter months, the sun is at a lower angle and I opt for the darker gray lens. www.mauijims.com

There are small multi-purpose tools, like the LEATHERMAN, Squirt. This tool has scissors for line cutting and other tools for minor on-the-water repairs. Get a retractable ring to wear on a belt. If it is made by LEATHERMAN, expect quality and innovation.

Topping things off is the hat. This can be tricky. Some anglers have a "lucky" hat and no matter what you find, he or she may not wear it. Stay away from hats, unless it is imprinted with "This hat was a gift and I have to wear it".

Most of the products I have mentioned are available on-line or in catalogs. Add their embroidered name for a personal touch and you have a perfect gift that can't be returned. Wick's Sports Lettering in Alexandria, VA does a great job with this!

The best gift of all is to take a friend or child fishing. Water works wonders!

* Arbogast continues its 75th Anniversary celebration with the introduction of a new color to one of its timeless classics.

The Arbogast Blueback Herring Jitterbug provides a shad imitating color to
the Jitterbug series. The Jitterbug's classic topwater action has induced
topwater strikes for many decades. This Jitterbug's high gloss pearl sides,
lifelike gills and scale pattern back give fans and collectors a new option
in this series of topwater classics.

The Jitterbug has been known as the No. 1 nighttime topwater lure of all
time. Blueback Herring is destined to become a classic for anytime of day.
The double-cupped lip, placed at an angle to ensure proper action, creates a loud paddling sound that's proven irresistible to fish for more than 50 years. Many anglers are now using the Jitterbug when fishing over schooling fish or in situations where others might use a buzzbait. On days when fish won't touch a fast moving topwater, the Jitterbug can still cause its trademark gurgling commotion when retrieved at a slow speed. The Blueback Herring Jitterbug gives a shad color to match their presentation. Even pro anglers are beginning to gravitate towards this bait ... after all, who hasn't caught fish on a Jitterbug?

The Blueback Herring Jitterbug is an Internet exclusive and can be found
only at www.lurenet.com.
