Yelas Wins FLW "Angler of the Year"

Kilgore, Texas, July 29, 2007 – Skeeter/Yamaha Pro Jay Yelas has captured his second Land O’ Lakes Angler of the Year award this past weekend at the FLW Tour’s final 2007 qualifying tournament, the Chevy Open on the Detroit River.

Yelas now has three Angler of the Year titles to his name, including winning the FLW title in 2002, and taking honors a the BASS Angler of the Year in 2003. Yelas, 41, won the title with 1,074 points out of a possible 1,200 points, and with the honor, wins more than $65,000 in cash and prizes.

“Being honored at the Angler of the Year is still exciting, even after 20 years in the business,” says Yelas. “The competition gets stronger each season, and this year my tackle box had a totally different look, as I tried many new techniques and baits, taking me outside of my comfort level, yet being successful doing so,” Yelas says.

Since that time, Yelas as earned more than $1.75 million, including 62 top ten finishes in FLW Tour and BASS events.

This season, Yelas earned a sixth place finish on Fort Loudoun Lake in Knoxville, Tennessee, before earning back-to-back second-place finishes on Lake Norman in Charlotte, North Carolina and Beaver Lake in Rogers, Arkansas. His 25-place during this past weekend’s Chevy Open on the Detroit River helped to secure his Angler of the Year title.

The 2002 Bassmaster Classic Champion now has his eyes on the Forrest Wood Cup/Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas, August 2-8. Thousands of anglers from more than 40 states, Japan, Australia, Canada, Italy and Spain have been targeting the $2 million event this entire season.
